New signing Danny Wright believes Solihull Moors could be a surprise package in the National League this season.

The Moors managed to escape relegation last season, even after being bottom of the National League table at the half way point of the campaign.

Despite the Moors’ incredible form in the second-half of last season to ensure unlikely survival, Tim Flowers’ side remain favourites for the drop ahead of the new season.

Striker Danny Wright joined the club earlier this month, after his release by League Two side Cheltenham Town at the end of last season.

The Moors had an interest in the 33-year-old in January, but were knocked back by Wright. Despite this, the forward is pleased to finally be on board at the Moors and firmly believes the club can prove doubters wrong in the National League this season.

“Solihull showed a bit of interest in January, and I probably should have gone then,” Wright told the Non-League Paper.

“But I just felt that I had a bit of unfinished business with Cheltenham. Fortunately, they didn’t give up on me, even with the change of management. I spoke to Tim and as soon as I heard he was keen I was delighted to sign up.

“It’s a great little club and I think their ambition is a lot higher than what other people on the outside think they’ll do. Nobody is expecting us to be top of the league, but we’ll definitely surprise a few. I’m really excited.”

Wright saw less and less game time with Cheltenham Town as the season progressed last campaign and while he is disappointed with how his time at the Robins finished, he is more than happy to drop back down to the National League to play his football, with this being a level in which he has previously scored over 100 goals.

“Of course I’m disappointed at the way it ended at Cheltenham. I feel a bit unlucky in terms of opportunities once we got into the League and I’d love to have spent a couple more seasons there.

“But sitting on a bench is no good for me. You have to do what makes you happy in life and for me, that’s playing – whatever the level.”

“I’ve played eight or nine years in the National League and I haven’t suddenly got too big for my boots,” Wright continued.

“I’m more than happy to be here and I’ll still be doing all the dirty work. I’ll never lose the motivation to play football.”
